Warehouse logistics specialist

Warehouse logistics specialists at Käthe Wohlfahrt have the following responsibilities:

  • Accepting and inspecting goods
    • Planning the space for incoming merchandise
    • Receiving the delivered merchandise, inspecting it for completeness and integrity
    • In the case of a complaint, feeding back to logistics management and taking further action if necessary
    • Organising unloading procedures
  • Storing the goods
    • Planning the warehouse zones and facilities
    • Selecting storage spaces according to technical, economical and safety aspects or identifying specified storage spaces for products and product varieties
    • Storing goods with the help of material handling equipment in compliance with the type of merchandise, material characteristics, volume and weight
    • Documenting storage using special software
  • Taking quality maintenance and improvement action, e.g. carrying out visual inspections, checking merchandise with a best before date, checking the humidity and room temperature
  • Transporting merchandise within the company
    • Selecting lifting devices depending on the nature and quantity of goods, the distance and taking the aspects of accident prevention, environmental protection and costs into account
    • Transport merchandise to other company departments
  • Providing a delivery plan taking economical, infrastructure, scheduling and environmental aspects into account
  • Picking merchandise
    • Preparing the flow of materials and information
    • Putting together merchandise as per the order
    • Suggesting possible improvements
  • Packaging merchandise
    • Defining the packaging costs
    • Packaging merchandise according to customer requirements taking into account the type of merchandise and transport, the transport route and efficiency as well as contractual, national and international provisions
    • Selecting suitable packaging machines and equipment
    • Marking and labelling merchandise
    • Disposing of used packaging material in an environmentally compatible way
  • Loading merchandise
    • Planning loading work processes
    • Preparing loading according to cost and customer requirements; complying with statutory regulations and contractual provisions at the same time
    • Providing suitable handling and loading equipment
    • Defining the freight weight and volume, checking that the transport and handing equipment is suitable for use
    • Loading and securing merchandise on transport taking the type of shipping and destination into account
  • Dispatching merchandise
    • Defining shipping costs
    • Processing shipping documents, if applicable using specialist knowledge of foreign languages
  • Optimising logistical processes
    • Providing ABC analyses to classify storage space depending on frequency of access
    • Making suggestions for improving interfaces (e.g. procurement/warehouse) within the logistical process
  • Defining and analysing key performance indicators
    • Carrying out inventories

Warehouse logistics specialists should have the following skills:

  • Above-average general intellectual capacity
  • Above-average spatial perception and awareness (e.g. storing merchandise in the warehouse or loading lorries taking the type of merchandise, material characteristics, volume and weight into account)
  • Perception and processing speed (e.g. quickly checking that accompanying transport documents are correct and complete)
  • Reaction speed (e.g. stopping forklift trucks and shelf lifting devices in sudden hazardous situations)
  • Hand and eye coordination (e.g. operating lifting devices or storage and retrieval machines when transport merchandise)
  • Planning and organisational skills (e.g. assigning loading and unloading times, storage space)
  • Spatial orientation (e.g. finding your way around sometimes large, complex warehouses with many shelves)

Warehouse logistics specialists should have the following knowledge and proficiencies:

  • Numeracy skills (e.g. defining shipping costs, freight weight and volume)
  • Understanding verbal statements (e.g. understanding sometimes vague customer requirements)
  • Verbal communication skills


Warehouse logistics specialists should have the following educational qualifications:

  • A secondary school leaving certificate


Apprenticeships:  one apprenticeship place per year

Apprenticeship period:  3 years, always starting on 01 September every year
